Explore the rich, tactile world of cold wax painting in this course designed for artists of all levels. Instructor Judith Steffke will guide you in utilizing oil paint and cold wax medium to create layered, expressive, and deeply textured artworks. Cold wax is a soft, buttery medium that mixes with oil paint to create a matte, velvety finish and allows for endless experimentation with layering, mark-making, and surface manipulation. This class is all about process and exploration and is suitable for abstract or representative artwork. All supplies provided.
This 4-week course will be held from 1-4 pm on Thursdays, May 22-June 12, in the Idonea Hersee Classroom at Art Reach, 111 E. Broadway in Mount Pleasant.

Join us for a unique and relaxed evening of creativity at our Creative Happy Hour! Intended to provide an open studio opportunity to get together with friends or like-minded artists, Creative Happy Hour is a weekly open studio session with a rotating media schedule.
On the first Friday of each month, you’ll be provided with a beautiful selection of still-life objects—fruits, flowers, textures, and more—allowing you to capture them through painting, drawing, or mixed media. The goal is to have fun, experiment, and let your creativity flow freely.

Locally-grown plants at reasonable prices will fill the T-barn at the Emmet County Fairgrounds in Petoskey for the annual Spring Plant Sale, hosted by the Northern Michigan Master Gardener Association. The event begins at 9 a.m. sharp. Free packets of native plant seeds will be available, and a Garden Marketplace will offer a variety of garden supplies and tools. Several informational tables will be set up: Smart Gardening; MSU-Extension, Wild Ones, Central Elementary School Garden, Pickerel-Crooked Lake Association. Led by Paige Rothaus, this workshop guides participants through designing and crafting your very own miniature ecosystem. The workshop begins with an introduction to the fascinating art of terrarium-making, covering the essential elements required for a thriving micro-garden. You'll learn about the different types of plants suitable for terrariums, their care requirements, and the art of arranging them to create visually stunning compositions encapsulating the beauty of nature within a glass enclosure.
At the end of the workshop, you'll leave with a one-of-a-kind terrarium that serves as a miniature sanctuary, effortlessly adding a touch of greenery and tranquility to any space. Whether you display it on your desk, shelf, or as a centerpiece in your home, your terrarium will be a constant reminder of your creativity and connection with nature.
No prior experience or green thumbs are necessary—this workshop is designed for beginners and plant enthusiasts alike. The workshop is open to all ages, and all supplies and plants are included. Students can select between an enclosed terrarium with high-humidity plants or an open succulent terrarium.

Peace Poles or Garden Posts are an artful way to embellish your garden or natural spaces with vivid color and charm. Instructor and gardener Kim Bigard will lead you in painting treated 4”x4” posts to make an artful impact on your landscape. An assortment of stencils and inspirational images will be provided to help tailor your post to your taste. Exterior grade paints will be utilized to create a durable finish. All finished posts will be drilled, prepped with rebar for staking, and capped with a decorative post cap. Students can choose between a 4-ft post or (2) 2-ft posts. All supplies are provided.

Join us for an immersive, skill-building 3-week course focused on creating stunning landscape paintings with watercolors. Led by instructor Cheryl Meyer, students will be encouraged to bring either their own landscape photos or come prepared with ideas of the scenery they would like to paint. The class will emphasize personal expression and creativity, allowing you to capture the essence and beauty of the natural world through your unique perspective.
You will work on larger paper throughout the course, providing ample space to bring your vision to life. Instruction will be centered on developing the finer details within your chosen landscapes, enabling you to enhance the depth and realism of your paintings.
While prior watercolor painting experience is recommended, it is not required to participate in this workshop.
The 3-week course will be held from noon-2 pm on Monday, June 2-16 in the Idonea Hersee Classroom at Art Reach, 111 E. Broadway in Mount Pleasant.
