State seeks food industry partners to meet food waste reduction goals

Wikimedia Commons

The state is seeking help from food industry partners, who are interested in collaborating to reduce food waste.

Michigan throws away more than a million tons of municipal food every year, which takes up space in landfills and contributes to greenhouse gas emissions.

The state is now developing a food waste roadmap to identify potential policy changes and programs that can cut food waste by 50% by 2030.

The project team is seeking recommendations and partners from people in food production, service, and retail.

Industry stakeholders will meet in working groups regularly and consider recommendations to improve infrastructure, education, food donation, technology, and production standards.

For more information about stakeholder involvement, visit the Michigan Sustainable Business Forum interest form.
