Justin Michal is the first Republican candidate to enter the race for Michigan's 1st Congressional District to try and unseat incumbent U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman, R-Watersmeet, in the GOP primary.
Michal: 'We need new leadership'
Michal's campaign is centered on "Bridging the Divides" by bringing small town values to Congress. Michal said he will focus on a commitment to working with local leaders and bringing change through strong leadership and practical solutions.
"That's the change that needs to happen in Washington DC," Michal said in a campaign video. "The rhetoric and the negativity that comes out of these conversations and the divisions we have in our country. If we can all come together, we can inspire the world to do it too."
A Grayling native, Michal says his rural heritage allows him to understand the frustrations and needs of middle class families.
His vision for Northern Michigan includes:
- Economic opportunity
- Strenthening infrastructure
- Improving healthcare & social services
- Championing enviromental stewardship and energy priorities
- Investing in education and the work force
- Expanding digital access and communication
In a campaign ad, Michal suggested it's time younger candidates take the reins.
"We need new leadership," Michal said. "One that's focused on fresh perspectives, new ideas and a willingness to listen to their constituents."
Bergman's path to re-election
Bergman has served in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2017. According to his campaign site, Bergman says he's a champion of America-First policies and the American worker.
Currently, Bergman is focusing on:
- Bringing broadband internet infrastructure to rural areas
- Supporting Veterans
- Protecting Michigan agriculture
- Anti-abortion legislation
- National security
- Immigration
- Education
Despite a new opponent entering the race, a spokesperson for the Bergman campaign remains confident that they will win big in 2026.
“Rep. Bergman has proven himself a leader for the First District in Congress and a fighter against the status quo," said James Hogge, a spokesperson for the Bergman campaign. "That’s why he set all-time First District fundraising records this year, has built his strongest grassroots brigade yet, has secured numerous endorsements - including President Trump’s."
Looking ahead
The GOP primary will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2026.
In total, there are five candidates looking to unseat Bergman in 2026: Callie Barr (D), Kyle Blomquist (D), Wayne Stiles (D), Michal and Zebulon Featherly (Independent).
The seat will be filled after the general election in Nov. 2026.
