A new program in northwest Michigan is currently accepting applications for people looking to reduce their housing costs.

Up to 10 grantees for the Make Your Home in Northwest Michigan program will receive $5,000 to go towards housing as well as $1,500 worth of benefits to network and enjoy the region.

The program is made possible through Traverse Connect, The Alliance for Economic Success, Networks Northwest, The Michigan Growth Office and the chamber of commerce groups for the Charlevoix, Manistee and Petoskey areas.

Interested individuals must have a lease or mortgage to a new home dated no earlier than April 1, 2025, and have begun working or have an employment agreement in one of the following counties: Antrim, Benzie, Charlevoix, Emmet, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Leelanau, Manistee, Missaukee or Wexford.

Traverse Connect representative Abby Baudry says the only job requirement to qualify is to be working 30 hours or more a week.

"We know that the cost of housing can make it hard to put down roots here in northwest Michigan," Baudry said. "That's why we're excited to offer this program in an effort to lower that barrier in housing to families and individuals. Our goal is to help newcomers make their move and help current residents stay here."

In addition to the housing support, awardees will also receive memberships to local networking and community groups, tickets to the City Opera House, the Old Town Playhouse and one-on-one relocation support with regional ambassadors.

"We want these perks to showcase why our area is such a special place to live," Baudry explained. "Successful incentive programs have shown that providing additional community perks helps people feel welcomed and connected to their place."

Applications will be accepted until May 26, 2026, or until all 10 grants have been awarded.
