State officials told WCMU participation in the sturgeon season would be left to the discretion of anglers. But the Michigan Department of Natural Resources announced a last-minute decision to cancel this morning.

It was a slow start, and then a quick end this weekend, to Michigan’s shortest fishing season. The lake sturgeon is a prehistoric fish that lives a protected life in Black Lake, but once a year, anglers vie to be one of the few to land a giant.

All 14 lives were saved and transported to emergency medical services. The mass-rescue operation took the Coast Guard three hours to complete.
