People planning to travel across northwest lower Michigan for the Thanksgiving holiday should prepare for hazardous conditions on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service in Gaylord.

Black ice is expected to lurk underneath the predicted eight inches of lake effect snow that's expected to accumulate Wednesday- Sunday across the region.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Nicole Sprinkles said travel danger will peak on Thursday.

"You're going to have sustained winds, possibly 15 to 25 mph, and then gusts from 30 to 45 mph," Sprinkles told WCMU. "You're going to have some pretty rapid drops in visibility on Thanksgiving Day. If you are planning to travel on Thursday you might want to leave a few hours earlier than what you're planning on."

Although, people traveling into Friday should still remain vigilant, Sprinkles said.

"I would consider leaving early Wednesday and then keep an eye on the forecast as things kind of develop," Sprinkles said. "Things are supposed to die down, but it's going to be still breezy and pretty cold on Friday. And with those winds it could still be kind of blowing everything around."

Up-to-date forecasts can be found on the National Weather Service website.
