A new AAA survey says 46% of Michigan drivers admitted to speeding in active school zone and 33% admitted to using their cell phone while driving in active school zones.

They say that while students go back to school across Michigan, they should use the ABC's of school zone safety avoid distractions, brake for safety, check for pedestrians and bikers.

In addition, AAA says that pedestrians should refrain from use electronic devices on the way to and from school, so they can focus on their surroundings.

Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson for AAA, says distracted walking can be just as dangerous as distracted driving.

"It's really important that your students are alert and focused," Woodland said. "They're not looking down at their phones and not wearing headphones while they're walking to and from school."

She says that students should use sidewalks when available. If no sidewalk is available, students should walk against the direction of traffic.

Nationwide, nearly one out of every five children aged 14 and younger killed in traffic crashes are pedestrians.
