The Mackinac Bridge Walk is one of Michigan's longest-running Labor Day traditions, having brought an estimated 30,000 people for the 2024 event.
The 2025 walk is set to begin at 7 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 1 and concludes at noon.
Starting at 6:30 a.m., vehicles will be unable to cross either way, with drivers recommended to make the crossing early to avoid getting trapped on the incorrect peninsula.
That's according to Michigan Department of Transportation spokesperson James Lake.
"For people who aren't starting from the side of the bridge that they intend to return to, you really want to make sure that you get dropped off pretty early on on the opposite side," Lake explained. "I would error on the side of caution and do it before 6 a.m. just to make sure that whoever's driving the vehicle can make it back across before the bridge closes at 6:30."
Transportation will not be provided to re-cross the bridge once the walk is over. Walkers must plan transportation back across the bridge if they do not intend to double cross. Ferries will be available at cost.
New walkers will be accepted up until 11:30 a.m. However, those who have not made it to the halfway point by 10 a.m. will be turned back in the direction they came from. For double crossers, this means they will have to hit that halfway point by 10 a.m. to make it back to the side they began on.
"Check the weather in advance, that's important," Lake said. "You want to know whether you want to have a rain jacket with you, or sunglasses, depending on what the circumstance is. But otherwise there's not a lot of preparation necessary for participation...it's really easy to participate."
Portable toilets will be available in both Mackinaw City and St. Ignace.
Those with disabilities who are in need of accommodations to participate can contact the Mackinac Bridge Authority by Aug. 29 at 906-643-7600.
