A 3.2-mile stretch of US-23 in Iosco County is set for reconstruction.
Officials say the road connecting East Tawas and the city of Tawas has outdated infrastructure below the surface.
The project, scheduled to be built in 2027, includes new pavement, curb and gutter, storm sewer, sidewalks, signs, pavement markings, and landscaping.
The Michigan Department of Transportation is proposing reduction from the current four-lane configuration to three lanes (one lane in each direction for through-traffic and a center left-turn lane).
The state says reducing the lanes can decrease the amount of crashes, and create a more pedestrian-friendly environment.
Brent Barringer is the city manager for East Tawas, which hosted a meeting for public comment on the plans.
Out of the 150 people that attended he said the majority of people were in favor of leaving the road alignment the way that it is today.
Barringer said he understands people's fear of possible congestion in the flow of traffic
"I can see the pros and cons of both sides and both options,” Barringer said. “I'm waiting to hear all the information so I can work with the council to come up with the best solution for the city."
Councils from both cities will make the final decision on whether or not they reconstruct the roadway the way it is or reduce the number of lanes.
MDOT is still accepting public comment on the project until February 26.
