In Michigan's upcoming 104th House District Republican primary election, 20-year-old Owen Suhy is running against incumbent John Roth.

“I’m running for reelection because I want to get things done that we started,” said Roth, who is seeking his second term.

Roth said that everyone has the right to run for office and that if people think they can make a change in the community, that's when they should run or get involved.

"Unfortunately, I think it takes some experience and life to get those experience and understand how to work with other representatives to get to get that done," Roth said.

Suhy is a 2023 Northwest Michigan College graduate from Traverse City. His experience with banking and fiscal responsibility, he says, makes balancing the state budget a priority of his run to the statehouse, along with voter integrity, constitutional carry and most importantly youth representation.

Suhy said young people are feeling unrepresented in the statehouse.

“Over-experience in politics is not going to be beneficial to the community as a whole,” Suhy said. “I don't feel that my lack of years of experience is an issue because I'm just looking to help the community.”

Absentee ballots for the August 6th primary elections have been sent out and can be requested from local clerks' offices.
