The Cadillac ELKS honored the 247th Flag Day, and the 249th birthday of the U.S. Army, Friday at the Cadillac City Park.
Community members gathered and listened as a brief history of the nation’s past flags. Attendees were reminded of what the American flag stands for — Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love and Fidelity.
This year’s guest speaker was Retired Colonel Bill Ewald, who spoke about what it means to be an ELK, and the honor associated with Flag Day and the birth of our nation’s Army.
Tony Schmidt is a Navy Veteran and a member of the American Legion in Wisconsin and the Honor Guard.
Schmidt says this year Flag Day means more than ever. With the recent passing of his son, a veteran of 21 years, and his brother’s health complications, Schmidt is reminded of the cost of freedom.
Army National Guard Veteran, Phil Potvin, says he honors Flag Day and all it represents by being a member of the Honor Guard and an active participant in his church.
