The Fresh Waves Downtown Mural Project is inviting artists to create vibrate works of art on the walls of businesses and homeowners in downtown Alpena.

The project is run by The Alpena Downtown Development Authority and was created back in 2019 by Alpena-native and artist Aaron Golbeck, whose started similar projects in various other cities and states across the country.

Artists will be able to express themselves through their artworks, giving them opportunities to share their abilities.

Anne Gentry, a representative of the DDA, said the project isn't limited to just Michigan artists.

"We've had artists that are based in northeast Michigan, we've had some from downstate and then we've had an artist from North Carolina, one from Texas [and] one from Chicago. We had one from Canada that's painted two of them." Gentry said.

Local businesses in the area say the project brings out a sense of joy and happiness in community members and tourists, breathing fresh life into the town as well.

The application deadline for artists is on April 20 and the murals will be finished by September 30.
