Seven severe weather warnings have been issued this week in the Thumb region, including multiple warnings Friday.

A cluster of thunderstorms is currently making its way through the thumb region, triggering multiple severe weather warnings.

This pattern of severe weather has become a common occurrence over the past week, leading to seven warnings for severe thunderstorms and tornadoes in Tuscola and Sanilac Counties.

Ian Lee, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pontiac, says this type of weather is common during the summer months.

“We just had an active pattern where we had a lot of moisture, a lot of instability, that’s promoted the potential for severe thunderstorms,” he said. “This happens a lot throughout the summer so this isn’t anything out of the ordinary.”

Two tornado warnings were issued in Tuscola County within the past week – including the one today. However, Lee assures residents of the Thumb that tornadoes shouldn’t be a major cause for alarm as it's normal for them to get called off early.

“Tornados in southeast Michigan typically are pretty brief in nature. So when we issue our warnings, we’ll do it for about a half hour,” he said.

Looking ahead, thunderstorms are predicted to continue throughout the weekend in Tuscola County, with the possibility of clearing up by the start of the upcoming week.
