The Army Corps of Engineers is moving forward on construction of a new lock at the Soo. The Corps will begin weekly construction blasting later this month.

Blasting is used to break up bedrock that can be excavated to make room for the new lock.

Guards will be posted to keep people at a safe distance, and marine traffic will be controlled to reduce safety risks.

The Army Corps said it has restrictions in place to mitigate stray flying rocks and excess ground vibrations or shock waves. Airhorns will sound off 5-minutes and 1-minute prior to blasting.

Blasting will begin in late July and continue semi-regularly though the year. More blasting at the locks is scheduled for 2024.
