Michigan residents in need of rental assistance have until 11 A.M. this Wednesday (April 5th, 2023) to get help through the state’s top housing authority.

The Michigan State Housing Development Authority's (MSHDA) Housing Choice Voucher Program for sixty one of eighty-three Michigan counties opened March 22nd.

To be eligible, your income needs to fall within allowable limits, the rental unit you choose to live in has to meet the Housing Quality Standards inspection and rental limits set forth by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). If you pass background checks then you may qualify for the program. Proof of residency in the county for which you apply is required upon your name being drawn off the waiting list for assistance.

Lisa Kemmis, the director of rental assistance and homeless solutions at the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA), said residents can go online and sign up to the waiting list.

“So, if they don't have internet access, or a phone, certainly, have a family member help. We could connect them also to a local service agency in the community that could assist them with applying,” she said.

Kemmis said she sees this program going smoother in the future. She said they are set to receive over an 11% increase in funding, which means more families can be served in the state.

She added, “So I can I only see the HUD growing this program providing us with more funding more resources to help those most in need in their community.”

MSHDA officials say to gather the following information for each household member before applying:

  1. Full legal name
  1. Social Security number
  1. Date of birth
  1. Annual Income from all sources (before taxes or deductions)
  1. If necessary, contact information for the person who will assist with completing future paperwork
