EPA announces a $5.4 million settlement with Dow to recover Midland cleanup costs

Wikimedia Commons

The EPA has reached a proposed multi-million dollar settlement with the Dow Chemical Company to cover cleanup costs on the Tittabawassee River. Public comment on the settlement is now open.

Dioxin cleanup efforts at the Dow plant in Midland have been going on for several years now. Under a 2010 agreement, Dow is required to cover the EPA’s costs for site cleanup.

The new $5.4 million settlement would recover EPA costs from remedial investigation, that were incurred prior to the 2010 agreement.

An EPA spokesperson said public comment on the settlement is required by law, and if serious concerns are raised about the settlement’s terms, the EPA will modify the settlement.

The deadline for comment is February 27th. For the full settlement terms and public comment, visit the EPA website here.
