Michigan Business leaders' outlook tempered amid slow hires

A new survey shows Michigan business leaders are continuing to have problems finding workers and are not so optimistic on thoughts of the economy.

Business Leaders for Michigan, which conducted the survey, showed more than 90 percent of respondents saying they expect the economic outlook – both statewide and nationally - to stay the same or get worse over the next six to 12 months.

The survey also revealed nearly eighty percent of Michigan business leaders expect to have a hard time filling jobs for the next six to 12 months as well.

Randi Berris, Vice President for Marketing and Communications at Business Leaders for Michigan, said there are some bright spots though.

“There are still a lot of jobs out there in Michigan, in high tech and advanced manufacturing at all levels. And executives are looking for skilled people to be able to fill those positions” Berris said.

She also added the survey also showed 50 percent of respondents expect inflation to improve in coming months... and many are still looking to hire workers.

She said that wraparound services, like employer-paid training and other programs, could benefit job seekers and those already hired to build new skillsets.

“So one of the barriers to employment is having access to affordable childcare, being able to have reliable transportation to get to and from a job and housing,” Berris explained.

Business Leaders for Michigan conducted the internal member survey from November 28th to December 12th of 2022.
