Whitmer not planning new mask orders despite CDC guidance

State of Michigan

Governor Gretchen Whitmer says she’s not about to issue new health orders based on new guidance from the federal Centers for Disease Control. The new guidance says people should mask up while indoors in areas that are COVID-19 hotspots.

Whitmer says she’s watching what the CDC’s calling for, especially when it comes to schools re-opening in the fall. Whitmer says she and Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist are following advice to wear masks at indoor gatherings. But Whitmer says mask mandates are not in the plans.

“I do not anticipate another pandemic order, not in the near future and maybe not ever.”

But Whitmer says she is keeping an eye on the threat posed by COVID variants. Her thinking could also be influenced by legal, political and, possibly, ballot challenges to her emergency powers.
