Governor Whitmer has ordered state and national flags in Michigan to be lowered to half-staff on Tuesday, October 8 to honor a fallen soldier.

According to the Governor’s office, Army Staff Sergeant Kelly Richards passed away September 25 while competing for an expert field medical badge in South Korea.

Lowering the flags will coincide with his military funeral.

Staff Sergeant Richards was 32 years old, survived by his wife, Rachel, parents and nine siblings. He was born in Petoskey and was raised in Boyne City and Grayling.

Flags should be returned to full-staff on Wednesday, October 9.

The obituary can be read here.
