Emmet County florist shares free flowers with community

A florist left an unexpected deposit in a downtown Petoskey trash can.

Kalin Sheick decided to turn the can into a one-stop shop for people to pick up free flowers and make their own bouquets.

On a typical day, Sheick runs her business out of her garage. Today, she said she wanted to do something to give back to the community.

“I feel like we are just so supported and loved in our community up here in Northern Michigan,” Sheick said. “Flowers make everybody happy, like no one is ever not happy when they get fresh flowers.”

Free to the community, Sheick said the installment cost her “a couple of hundred dollars”.

She said she and a member of her team had the flowers ready at five this morning and only petals were left at 7:45 a.m..

“We knew when we installed it that people would be coming by to grab flowers throughout the morning,” Sheick said. “I don’t think we estimated how quickly it would go but we knew that we wanted a day where it was cloudy and a little damp, it’s like perfect temperatures for flowers.”

Sheick announced the free flowers as a thank you to the community in an Instagram post where she has more than 9,000 followers.

View this post on Instagram Grateful doesn’t begin to adequately explain how I feel about this community. ?? ?? Both online and in real life I feel supported and seen and believed in and loved and that’s a lot for a girl just slinging flowers in a garage and sharing her story. ?? ?? Petoskey area friends. Swing by this special trash can on at Lake & Howard St this AM and pull as many flowers as you like and make yourself an arrangement. Take some to a friend. Surprise someone. ?? ?? This installation was a long time coming and a rainy October morning seemed perfect for @labohemiana and I to rock it out. ?? ?? The world needs more of the feeling you get when someone hands you flowers. And the world needs even more of the feeling you get when you’re lucky enough to be the one that designed them and hands them over. ?? ?? I want that for you today. There’s no rules. Just share the love. ?? ?? Enjoy Petoskey. I love you. ?? Clinks ?? ?? Xo?? ?? K ?? ?? PS wanna see it come to life? Check my stories. ?? ?? PPS tag us in your photos so we can see what you made.
