The Doherty Hotel in Clare is going back to its historic exterior with more than six-million dollars in renovations.

The Doherty Hotel in Clare will be remodeling the historic portion of the hotel that originates from 1924.

The renovations are estimated at 6.2 million dollars. The hotel has been approved for tax credit to contribute to the funding of the project. Owners Ann and Dean Doherty hope to receive grants for their historical status.

Owner Ann Doherty said being a downtown hotel, they bring people and business to the town.

“(We are) hoping that everyone will benefit from it,” Doherty said. “(Guests) might spend their first visit just dining here at the hotel with our new lounge, but hopefully the next time they are in town they will check out some of the other restaurants in the area as well and we do have great downtown shopping.”

The project entails replacing one of the first elevators in the state of Michigan, restoring the exterior to its original structure and decreasing the amount of economy rooms to increase the size if the rooms.

The project manager, Wayne Hoffman from Spence Brothers, along with the rest of the renovation team will be at the city commission meeting on Monday, May 20 reveal the rest of the project details.

The renovations have not started, but the goal is to be completed by St. Patrick’s Day of 2020.
