Governor Whitmer extends Michigan's stay-at-home order, lifts some restrictions

State of Michigan

Governor Gretchen Whitmer today announced she is extending Michigan's Stay-at-Home order until May 15. At the same time, the governor also announced an easing of some restrictions, allowing more travel and allowing people to engage in outdoor activities, including motor boating and golf.

Under the new rules, Michiganders are allowed to travel to second homes, although Whitmer said she still "strongly discourages" such travel unless it's essential. Big box stores can once again sell paint and gardening supplies, and nurseries and landscaping businesses can reopen as long as they strictly adhere to social distancing measures.

Today's order requires the wearing of face masks in confined public areas including grocery stores and pharmacies, and the governor said, businesses can refuse service if a customer is not wearing a face mask.

Whitmer continues to assert that she does not need approval from the state legislature to extend the emergency order. Republicans in the Michigan House and Senate today are debating a meaure to limit the governor's emergency powers.
