Central Michigan University late Thursday reported its first confirmed Covid-19 cases. In a written statement, CMU President Bob Davies said two students who had traveled out of Michigan for spring break have tested positive for the repspiratory illness.
Davies said one student did not return to campus, but rather went to their permanent residence in another city.
The other student who tested positive returned to a campus residence hall on Wednesday. That student is being isolated and will return to their permanent residence on Friday. Davies said CMU health officials are working to identify anyone who may have been in close contact with the student.
Davies asked any CMU students or employees who are still on campus and have been in Beddow Hall in the university's tower complex to take extra precautions with hand washing and to closely self-monitor for symptoms of Covid-19. Those symptoms include fever, cough and shortness of breath.
He said extensive cleaning of areas the student may have visited is underway, and he expects more cases to be confirmed, "As has occurred in cities and on college campuses around the world, we expect to learn of more cases among the members of our campus and community. We will continue to work with local health officials to monitor new cases as they are identified and to contact individuals who may be impacted or affected by any new cases."
