Possibility to see the northern lights

The northern lights will be on display over the next two nights, as long as the cloud cover moves along.

A geomagnetic storm watch is in effect for the next 48 hours. Solar energy will interact with the Earth’s atmosphere which can result in a display of the northern lights.

Michael Boguth is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Gaylord. He said even the lower peninsula has a chance to see the lights.

“It does show that the southern extent of the viewing could actually extend right through Northern Michigan,” Boguth said. “Perhaps all the way down the Michigan-Ohio border by late tonight.”

He also said the weather should cooperate to see the northern lights.

“If we indeed, do get it tonight, perhaps again tomorrow night, if this storm can last long enough, we should have plenty of clear skies to view it.”

Boguth says the northern lights tend to last a few hours. The best viewing is around 1 am, if the cloud cover has cleared.
