A national food movement is launching in the new year in rural northeast Michigan. Alcona County is starting a “Farm to Fork” program with an eye on promoting tourism.

Judy MacNeill is the Chair for Farm to Fork Alcona. She said Farm to Fork Alcona is looking to bring farm produce to area restaurants and attract foodies in the process.

“People don't travel to Italy to go to McDonald’s or they don't go to north east Michigan just to have a plain a sandwich. They really want to experience the cuisine.  So, our plan is to experience what does north east Michigan taste like?”

MacNeill said by creating a model of what Alcona County has to offer the county can entrepreneurs.

“If you're that young person that’s dreamt of having your own small farm with maybe a niche farming type of product or if you’re that restaurant that would really like to focus on locally sourced foods. Those are the types of opportunities that we really want to bring to people's attention”.

MacNeill said Farm to Fork has planned a conference in February to educate farms and businesses on how to become involved.
