A state program called  “10 Cents a Meal for School Kids and Farms” is expanding this year to provide local produce to more K-12 students.

Bill DiSessa is a spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Education. He said It grew in popularity last year, and this year, it’s being expanded to an additional six counties.

“The grant that we received is certainly something that can be spread out statewide. You’re talking school districts in this state happen to be in rural areas and certainly the nearby produce the farms supply certainly are in the same area. So that makes sense”.

DiSessa said  the program expanded from 23 counties to 29, most of which are rural.

“Obviously it's nutritious to have fresh produce. So, if it's locally grown it's going to be fresh. Also, the idea is it’s sort of a win win. It’s a win for the school and the students but also the local farmers. You know we’re using their products”.
