Every week, 'Destination Out' features creative improvised music, traditional world music, and jazz. Host Mike Johnston also presents a feature each week, focusing on a particular artist, or a unique style of music.

Audio for each episode of Destination Out is available for two weeks online after the episode airs. To listen, scroll below the playlists on this page and click on the episode you are interested in. You will then see three audio players, one for each hour of the program. This audio is automatically removed two weeks after an episode's original airdate.

We featured the music of Muhal Richard Abrams who passed away this past week at the age of 87. We played from one of his earliest recordings with the MJT + 3 from 1957 and on up through the years to his highly regarded Hearninga Suite album from 1989. WE also covered music from Booker Ervin, Grachan Moncur III and Roscoe Mitchell.

We featured the music of 82 year old bassist Cecil McBee from recordings spanning his prolific career. Including recordings with Pharoah Sanders, Jackie Mclean, Roy Brooks,Yusef Lateef, Charles Lloyd and more.

Music this week brought to you by our featured artist Rosco Mitchell.

In memory of friend Mari Potter who passed away at the age of 58 this past week we spun several of her favorite songs that were kindly put into sets by her husband Mike Gilmore for broadcast. Included in the sets were tracks from the African band Tinariwen, Hamza El-din and Abdullah Ibrahim. As well as a couple of tracks from Bob Marley's classic album Exodus. We rounded out the program with tracks from Miles Davis, Horace Tapscott and Gato Barbieri.

We featured the late experimental double bassist Fernando Grillo. Including tracks from his solo lp Fluvine as well as works that he perfomed with Rumanian composer Iancu Dumitrescu and a guest appearance with the King Ubu Orchestra. We also played more tracks this week from Old and New Dreams as well as Scandinavian pianist Bobo Stenson.

We featured music from Freddie Hubbard from a couple of his Blue Note era recordings. Also tracks from from drummer Ed Blackwell in various band settings.We closed out the last hour of the program with tracks from Sun Ra's Omniverse album from 1979 as well as related cuts from former band members Tyrone Hill and Marshall Allen. 

This weeks program featured multi instrumentalist Sam Rivers recordings from the 1970. Also included in the program are recordings From Texas trumpeter Dennis Gonzalez and New York alto saxophonist John Zorn's Masada band.

During the second hour of Destination Out we featured 20th Century percussion music. Playing classic pieces from Toru Takemitsu, John Cage, Edgar Varese, Karlheinz Stockhausen and others.

We featured saxophonist Gary Bartz from various recordings that he made in the late 60's and early 70's. Including recordings with his NTU Troop, Max Roach, McCoy Tyner and Woody Shaw.
