A new grant will bring more programming to the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary.

The Friends of the Sanctuary group was awarded $15,000 by the Michigan Humanities Council.

Stephanie Gandulla is the media coordinator for the Alpena Sanctuary. She said the goal of the sanctuary is to help people have an interactive experience with Great Lakes History.

“We’re hoping to reach more people, to take it up a notch,” Gandulla said. “To have more programs, more tours, and just make Thunder Bay itself and on-water activities to be more accessible to even more people.”

She said workers will use off-season hours over the winter to improve the program before tours start again in May.

School field trips will begin again at the sanctuary in May. The facility will open to the public Memorial Day weekend until mid-October.
