Commercial ships are unable to pass through the Soo Locks after a cargo ship ran aground on the North side of Sugar Island in the St. Mary’s River late Wednesday evening.
Lt. Jr. Grade Sean Murphy is the communications officer for the US Coast Guard. He said no injuries have been reported
“It’s currently under investigation we don’t have a reason why it ran aground at this time. We are currently investigating it.”
Murphy said crews will deploy a boom in case of oil leakage from the ship.
“There is no pollution or oil spills at this time. We are closely monitoring that with our assets on scene right now.”
Murphy said they don’t know how long the St Mary’s River will remain closed.
“When we get a salvage plan from the ship’s company we can determine how long this closure will be.”
In June of 2016 the Calumet ran into the deck of a restaurant while moving from Lake Erie to the Cuyahoga River.
