New bill aims to reduce telemarketer harassment

A new bill in the state Senate would require phone solicitors to offer opt-out options at the beginning of their calls.

Under current law, telemarketers can’t keep calling people who have asked to be taken off of caller lists.

State Senator Morris Hood is the sponsor of SB0971. He said telemarketers have found ways to work around that law.

“We found out there are some telemarketers that when you go to request to be taken off that calling list before you can complete that statement the telemarketer will hang up.”

Hood said his bill would require telemarketers to provide people the option of opting out of call lists at the beginning of a call.

He said he’s hopeful the bill will be taken up by a committee soon.
