A recent survey shows that Michigan residents overwhelmingly support a significant boost in state funding for higher education.

Almost 80 percent of Michigan residents say the state should substantially increase spending on its 15 public universities to keep college affordable for in state students.

And 95 percent say public universities are important to the state's economy.

That's according to a new poll conducted for the Michigan Association of State Universities.

Daniel Hurley heads the Association.

We certainly hope that that message will resonate in the State Capitol in the coming weeks as they put the finishing touches on next year's state budget.

Hurley says state investment per student in higher education has dropped almost half since 2001 when inflation is factored in.
