Two U.S. congressman from Michigan have introduced legislation to help identify PFAs sites across Michigan and the country.

PFAs, or perfluoroalkyl substances, are a family of chemicals that have been found across the state and are linked to cancer and other health problems.

Congressman Jack Bergman and Dan Kildee introduced legislation that would put 50 million dollars towards identifying PFAs sites across the U.S.

Congressman Kildee said the legislation is important.

“This legislation would allow the U.S. Geological Survey to search for toxic PFAs chemicals in water and soil and air all over the country.”

Kildee said the goal is to help communities understand the extent of the contamination.

“It would provide some help to communities by giving the information that they need in order to figure out how to remediate the problem.”

He said anecdotally there have been reports about PFAs sites all over the country - this bill would investigate and confirm how many there actually are.
