The Village of Kingsley has been selected as the future location of a 100,000 square foot medical marijuana growing facility. The facility carries a $20-million price tag.

Village trustees approved a resolution this week essentially welcoming growers.

Ross Childs is the interim village manager for Kingsley. He said trustees did not approve the sale of medical pot in Kingsley, but they approved everything else.

“And adopting the resolution they approved the growing, the processing, the testing, the security, and the transportation. But they did not approve any of the sites to go ahead to distribute and sell. It would be sold to large places it would not be in the village. There would not be a selling place in the village”.

Childs said completion of the facility would boost the local economy by bringing in some 200 jobs to the small village.

“It’s a large operation. A lot of the jobs are not high paying jobs, but on the other hand there are a number that would be. The people that have to do the testing and overseeing the operation. Plus the contract for security I know the one we saw in Chicago had a lot of security people and they’re higher paying”.

Childs said TheraCann, the company proposing the construction, must first gain licensing from the state before the project can begin.
