Dozens of state lawmakers received subpoenas last week as part of a case alleging Republican lawmakers drew political maps for their own benefit.

Mark Brewer is the attorney on the case, which was brought by the League of Women Voters.  He said he is casting a wide net to find proof of partisan intent.

“We did some research and attempted to subpoena all the persons that we’re aware of who were involved in the process back in 2011.”

Brewer said this week several US Congressman asked to join the case as defendants.

“For example Congressman Moolenaar, who is not only a member of Congress now but who was on the redistricting committee in the state senate in 2011 which drew the congressional districts in which he now serves.”

A representative for the Congressman did not immediately respond to our request for comment.

Brewer said the congressional members attempting to join the case have made their intent clear.

“Their goal is, and they’ve been very candid about this, to join the case and then ask the court to dismiss it.”

Secretary of State Ruth Johnson, who is the sole defendant in the case, has filed a motion to stay the case until the Supreme Court decides on current gerrymandering cases from Wisconsin and Maryland.

Brewer said the people subpoenaed have 28 days to respond
