A judge has ordered Peninsula Township to pay $50 million to the region's 11 wineries, saying the township's business restrictions were unconstitutional.

U.S. District Court Judge Paul L. Maloney said Peninsula Township's zoning ordinance is unconstitutional and harmed 11 wineries along Old Mission Peninsula.

The Peninsula Township board voted Wednesday night to reject a settlement proposal from a group of wineries located on Old Mission Peninsula.

Leelanau County has become a hotspot for wineries. 25 have taken over the peninsula, making it a destination spot for wine enthusiasts all over the world.…
