Scott Allen Thompson, 56, of Hawks, was arraigned Aug. 2 following an animal cruelty investigation. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources said it found ten dead animals on his property and numerous others starving, without water and living in "poor conditions."

A new ballot initiative wants to create a registry of convicted animal abusers.

Last month, a federal judge ordered the release of 4,000 beagles from a Virginia research and breeding facility after violating federal regulations. The Humane Society of Midland County offered to help and took in 50 of the beagles to find new homes.
