It’s not just dirt—it’s SOIL! Monica Jean, Field Crop Educator from MSU Extension, explains that soil is made up of four components: air, water, inorganic material and organic matter—and that soil is precious!

She also explains the four types of soil texture: sand silt, loam and clay. The many types of soil in Michigan may need to be amended with nutrients including compost or fertilizer, or a cover crop to create optimum health and crop productivity.

For gardeners who want to know about the quality of their soil, Monica suggests taking samples and sending it to a laboratory, where it will be analyzed. Results, including comprehensive information and recommendations for improving the soil will be sent back in a timely manner.
