The Beat

Saturdays Noon-3pm

'The Beat' is a weekly mix of jazz, blues and much more. Each week, host David Nicholas plays selections from WCMU's extensive record and CD library, and brings in some of his own favorite albums from home.

Ways to Connect

Almost two hours of new releases on the show this week…plus remembering guitarist Chuck Loeb who recently passed. Looking back too with Hank Mobley, Herbie Mann and The Harper Brothers.

This week on The Beat, a tribute to veteran record producer and label manager Joe Fields who passed away last month at age 88.  He founded Muse, Highnote and Savant Records and worked with Richie Cole, Phil Woods, Kenny Barron, Pat Martino, Willis Jackson and many others.

This week I previewed some of the Lansing Jazz Festival artists, including a brand new release from Paul Keller’s At Sundown Quintet. There is also a tribute to Detroit pianist Geri Allen. She recently lost her battle with cancer and died at age 60.

It was 50 years ago this weekend when an after-hours bar bust ignited five awful days in Detroit. Forty three people were killed – over 1,000 injured and the property damage was into the millions.  For most, the Motor City has never fully recovered.

David Nicholas featured music from both Sonny Rollins and Sonny Clark.  Other featured artists included Grant Green and Art Farmer.
