Whitmer opens manufacturing, extends stay-at-home

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has issued a new executive order that allows many manufacturing activities to resume but also extends many other restrictions through May 28th.

Governor Whitmer says coronavirus infection numbers are moving in the right direction. She says hospitals are better able to handle incoming cases. And she says there’s a plan that takes into account how COVID-19 appears to be spreading through different parts of the state.

So, she says it’s time to try re-opening manufacturers, but with a sense of caution.

“Abandoning the science and safety measures would expose us to a second wave that could possibly dwarf the one that we’ve been through and squander our hard work.”

Whitmer’s new order allows suppliers to re-open Monday in anticipation of auto assembly plants opening a week later. But there’s a caveat – she’ll hit the re-set button if there’s a surge in cases.

The governor also issued a new stay-at-home executive order that will still require most people to avoid unnecessary travel. The new order remains in effect through May 28th.
