Republican lawmakers looking at “any option” to pay for roads instead of a fuel tax

Michigan lawmakers are trying to ensure that all the money from the sales tax on fuel goes toward roads.

A proposed House transportation budget passed out of a committee Thursday. It would rename the sales tax at the pump and ensure that eventually the whole tax goes to roads. But some of that money now goes to schools and local governments.

Democratic Representative Leslie Love says she’s worried the proposal has not been vetted.

“We have had this proposal in front of us for hours. This is a terrible way to craft public policy and it’s an irresponsible way to allocate the tax dollars of Michiganders."

Republicans are also looking at requiring the Department of Transportation to develop proposals for the sale of state assets. Those include eight welcome centers and the Blue Water Bridge.
