After 12 seasons, the head coach of the Central Michigan University women’s basketball team, Sue Guevara, announced today she will step down.

Coach G, as she was affectionately called, is the winningest coach in CMU women’s basketball history.   Under Guevara, the team made three NCAA appearances, won four Mid American Conference West titles and two tournament championships.

Guevara posted a 231-156 overall record.

There wasn’t a dry eye at the press conference.

When she stepped up to the podium Guevara told the crowd she wasn’t dying and she hadn’t been asked to leave.

Instead, Guevara told the audience she was ready to retire.

“Not many coaches these days get to leave on their own terms,” Guevara said. “I do.”

Guevara talked about how she always demands her players give 100%.

“So if I’m going to ask our players to do that I have to do that. I didn’t feel like I could give our players 100%.”

Associate head coach Heather Oesterle will take over Central Michigan University's women’s basketball team.

Oesterle has been the associate head coach for seven years. At the press conference she tearfully told the audience the head coach position at CMU is her dream job.

“I just know it’s hard to replace a legend,” she said. “But I will do my best to make you proud every day.”

Oesterle has spent nine years under the mentorship of Coach Guevara. In her speech, Guevara told the audience she recommended Oesterle for the job.

Guevara ended by saying “now the ball goes to Heather.”
