The Children's Bookshelf: Sing Some More!

Click to read and listen

SING SOME MORE! written by Deborah Diesen and illustrated by Howard Gray is a joyous picture book about a noisy little group of birds that loves to bring music to anyone within ear reach.

The boisterous quartet includes a huge robin, a beautiful cardinal, a blue jay and a sweet little gold finch.  They sing before the sun gets up, they sing before families start their day and they even accompany one family on a trip to the park for a picnic ----where they perform. Each time they finish a song they proudly announce they will sing some more!

The text, written in an appealing rhyme, spreads the word about their many talents such as harmonizing, singing ballads and performing a cappella. All musical terms are defined in the back material.

The happy illustrations accompany the story with color and fun. The robin’s red breast is front and center at most of the quartet’s “pop up” concerts. Humor gloriously takes over at the family’s picnic when singing distracts the family and the dog takes the opportunity to snatch Dad’s sandwich. This delightful double spread illustration is alive with action as the potato chip bowl is up ended, squirrels walk through the chocolate chip cookies, Mom’s sunglasses go flying, little sister feels her  binoculars swing around her neck and the baby claps!

SING SOME MORE! written by Deborah Diesen, author of the popular Pout, Pout Fish books and illustrated by Howard Gray is just right for young children 3-7 years of age (Sleeping Bear Press, 2020).

Activity Questions for SING SOME MORE!

Have you ever heard the birds singing brightly in the morning?  Can you identify the song of a robin, a cardinal, a blue jay or a yellow finch? Ask your parents to help you go online to listen to one of the songs for each of these birds. Then try them out vocally---go ahead, be that bird and make some music!  Have fun.

Take another look at the double spread of the family’s picnic at the very instant when the dog snatches a sandwich. Find these details: chocolate chip cookies, a pair of sunglasses, binoculars, five squirrels, three cupcakes, a green bowl of chips, a thermos and spoons and knives. What else would you have taken on this picnic? Make a list of your own picnic items.

The phrase a cappella means, as is stated in the back of this book, singing without instruments. How many songs can you sing without the accompaniment of instruments? Draw a picture of yourself singing a cappella. For ideas think about all the holiday songs you sing. Be sure to decorate your drawing with colorful details that match the song’s lyrics. Parents can help.
