Tuesday is Election Day. And although people won’t vote for a president or governor, there are still plenty of items to consider on local ballots.

Some areas will get to decide if they want to allow businesses that sell recreational marijuana.

Citizens can put together ballot initiatives to allow or not allow marijuana. That’s what ten communities in Michigan are voting on. Including four in the metro-Detroit area, South Haven and Mount Pleasant.

Robin Schneider is the executive director of the Michigan Cannabis Industry Association. The organization advocates for marijuana businesses.

“Ballot initiatives are the ultimate voice of the voter in those communities”

So far, hundreds of communities have decided to opt out of allowing businesses that sell recreational marijuana. And the handful of previous ballot measures on the issue have almost exclusively resulted in businesses not being allowed to sell marijuana.
