House Democrats push for Michigan Reproductive Health Act

Cheyna Roth

Some Democrats in the state Legislature want to pass a Reproductive Health Act.

The lawmakers face an uphill battle with their Republican counterparts.

Republicans have introduced bills that would restrict abortion access in the state. Including a bill to ban abortions, in some cases, as early as six weeks.  Governor Gretchen Whitmer has promised to veto the bills.

Now Democrats will try to advance bills that remove current restrictions for abortions – like waiting periods, prohibitions on telemedicine, and bans on private insurance coverage.

It’s unlikely they will get anywhere in the Republican controlled Legislature. But Whitmer says they still have to try.

“We are all acutely aware of how gerrymandered this Legislature is and that it’s an uphill battle, but it doesn’t mean you don’t fight it.

Right to Life of Michigan is currently working to put a measure on the ballot. It would ban the dilation and evacuation abortion. It’s a procedure most commonly used in the second trimester.
