Representative Larry Inman is accused of extortion, soliciting a bribe, and lying to the FBI.
Prosecutors are challenging his defense strategy
The U-S Supreme Court says campaign donations are free speech, and protected by the first amendment.
Representative Larry Inman is accused of selling his vote for money.
His legal team says that would have been a campaign donation, and it’s protected by the 1st amendment.
Prosecutors say when he tried to sell his vote, that was a classic case of quid-pro-quo, and he broke federal law.
In a brief filed Friday, prosecutors said, “The law remains clear: Donors may not legally buy official acts of public officials. And public officials cannot attempt to sell their official acts.”
A federal judge will decide if the charges will move forward in the coming weeks.
