Attorney General Dana Nessel is scheduled to give her first public briefing on three major state cases this week. Nessel said she’ll be joined by Michigan State Police Colonel Joe Gasper and Michigan Solicitor General Fadwa Hammoud.

These are all cases that Nessel inherited from former Attorney General Bill Schuette, and Nessel has been tightlipped about her plans for these cases.

One case involves Michigan State University. A year ago, more than 100 women came forward in court and said former MSU sports doctor Larry Nassar sexually assaulted them. Many blamed M-S-U for not protecting them. Around the same time, then Attorney General Bill Schuette announced that he had appointed a special prosecutor to look into the school’s handling of the Nassar case.

Three people have been charged, including Nassar’s former boss, William Strampel and then university president Lou Anna Simon.

Another case Nessel will give an update on is the Flint water crisis. Multiple people have been charged as a result of the water crisis – including the former state health department director, Nick Lyon.

The final case is an investigation into potential sexual abuse by clergy within the Catholic Church.
