New research out of the University of Michigan is exploring patterns of evictions across the state and trying to understand how to reduce them.

Researchers at the University of Michigan say several cities across the state are ranked among the worst in the country for eviction rates.

Robert Goodspeed will co-lead the research. He said they hope to better understand evictions in the state.

“This is a problem we need to be able to track over time to understand the scope of the problem and potentially also understand the impact and role of different public policies in addressing it.”

One thing Goodspeed hopes to understand is who gets evicted and why.

“There is great leeway in who is evicted and why and we need to understand that much more. We also need to ensure that the rights that our state laws provide tenants are being upheld.”

The project is one of several being supported by the Poverty Solutions initiative - which supports research aimed at alleviating and preventing poverty.

Goodspeed said the year-long project will conclude in December.
