Challenge filed to keep redistricting proposal off ballot

A ballot proposal to change how Michigan draws congressional and legislative district lines is getting challenged in court.

The Voters Not Politicians campaign says drawing district lines should be handled by an independent commission. Right now, that’s the Legislature’s job.

The lawsuit to block that from being decided by voters was filed by Citizens Protecting Michigan’s Constitution, a ballot committee connected to business groups and Republican interests.

The lawsuit says the proposed amendment is sweeping and complex that it’s more like a re-write of the state constitution. And they say that should be done by calling a constitutional convention.

The redistricting campaign says it’s vetted the proposal with attorneys and expects to make the November ballot.
