The Flint City Council approved a 30-year contract with the Great Lake Water Authority during a special meeting Tuesday.

After months of delays, the city council approved the contract with Great Lakes Water Authority by a vote of 5-4.

Monica Galloway is on the Flint City Council and voted against the contract. She said she felt strong armed into the deal.

“We went to court on Monday and the Judge rendered that we need to make a decision or he would.”

Galloway said she is disappointed with the decision because the contract will ultimately give ownership of the Karegnondi pipeline to GLWA.

“According to the contract, that pipeline was a part of the deal. GLWA would be taking our interest and paying the bond debt and therefore the interest in that pipeline would belong to them.”

Other council members stressed the importance of the pipeline. Newly elected council member Maurice Davis said in a written statement “we were elected to make the right decision.” Of the 5 council members newly elected this month three voted in favor of the contract.

Mayor Karen Weaver said of the decision  “This has been a long time coming.”
