The head of the Detroit Crime Commission says he doesn’t put much stock in new FBI crime statistics that say Detroit is the most violent major city in America.

Andy Arena is the former FBI agent in charge of the Detroit division. He says the numbers can be skewed by unreliable record keeping systems. And he believes some cities manipulate data before giving it to the FBI.

“Now, having spent 24 years with the FBI, I’m not bad-mouthing my former agency. But I’ve never put a whole lot of stock in these FBI crime reports. And it’s not a fault of the FBI. They’re reporting what numbers are given to them.”

Detroit Police Chief James Craig is disputing the statistics… saying the city has made strides when it comes to violent crime. The FBI released a statement cautioning against ranking cities… saying it can create simplistic and misleading perceptions.
